Looking forward to the advancement of Chinese prison studies with the times

Features: After being officially approved by the Ministry of Education, the Central Judicial Police College has focused on discipline construction as the leading role, actively working to improve teaching and research standards, striving to realize the grand goal proposed by the Ministry of Justice to establish the college as a "national training base for prison and labor education personnel, a training base for senior judicial police officers, and a research base for prison reform." Since the 21st century, reform and opening-up have deepened, the economy has developed rapidly, and society has undergone rapid transformation. However, China's current prison system still faces structural issues that do not keep pace with social development. Under the leadership of the Ministry of Justice, pilot programs for prison system reform and adjustments in prison layout have been launched, and the legalization, scientification, and socialization of prison work have been comprehensively advanced. The reality has placed higher and more urgent demands on scientific theories of prisons, and the arduous task of discipline construction and development of Chinese prison studies has historically been placed before us. Against this backdrop, from October 30 to November 2, 2003, the th "National Academic Symposium on Discipline Construction and Development of Prison Studies" was successfully held at the Central Judicial Police College, co-sponsored by the Legal Education Department of the Ministry of Justice, the Prison Administration of the Ministry of Justice, and the Central Judicial Police College, and organized by the Central Judicial Police College. After careful preparation, the symposium received 36 academic papers. Representatives from more than 30 universities, research institutions, prison management agencies, and practical departments across the country attended the meeting, achieving fruitful results. In response to the requests of the participants and relevant departments, we have compiled and edited the symposium's outcomes for publication to serve the readers. The civilization and development of the prison system are an important part of governing the country according to law and building a rule-of-law state, as well as a significant manifestation of national political civilization. We believe that through the unremitting efforts of legal researchers, prison theory workers, and practical workers, Chinese prison studies with Chinese characteristics will keep pace with the times, continuously flourish, and effectively promote the civilization and progress of the prison system.
