Features: One of the purposes of this book is to identify what research needs to be conducted on the Chinese legal system before an effective comparison can be made with other legal systems, in order to assess China's position in the typology of legal systems. Professor Gluckman has already drawn attention to the similarities between Indonesian adat law and African customary law. The author believes that those familiar with the material in these two fields (and, I hope, others) will be shocked by the similarities in certain aspects of Chinese law. The differences will be equally enlightening. At the end, I hope what I have written will interest sinologists, but I must warn them that this book is primarily a sociological work and does not claim to address all the issues faced by sinologists.
