What is a hernia?

Patient's question:

Previously, my health was always fine. I would occasionally catch a cold or cough during seasonal changes, but nothing serious. Recently, I noticed some protrusions on my body, which terrified me. I went to the hospital for a thorough examination and was told that I had a hernia. What is a hernia?

Doctor's answer:

Hernia refers to the weakness in areas such as the abdominal wall, causing the intestines to weaken, such as in the umbilicus or inguinal region. After diagnosis, the likelihood of spontaneous healing is usually low, and surgical high ligation or laparoscopic treatment is typically required. Intense exercise or other stimulations can easily lead to the risk of hernia strangulation or intestinal necrosis. It is advisable to avoid strenuous activities. If symptoms of a cold are prominent, coughing relief may lead to a decrease in abdominal pressure, making the weakness more pronounced.
