Is pediatric hernia surgery very painful?

Patient's question:

I just took my son to the hospital for a check-up. The doctor said he has a hernia and needs surgery for treatment. But our family is very worried. How much suffering will such a young child have to endure through surgery? Are there any other treatment methods available?

Doctor's answer:

Hydrocele is one of the most common diseases in pediatric surgery and hydrocele surgery, mainly including congenital inguinal hernia and umbilical hernia. The main cause of pediatric hydrocele is congenital factors. Inguinal hernia is mainly caused by the failure of the processus vaginalis to close. Umbilical hernia is caused by delayed closure of the umbilical ring. Premature and low birth weight infants are not fully developed at birth. Inguinal hernias in children over 1 year old cannot heal on their own. If the umbilical hernia is over 4 years old or the umbilical ring diameter is 2-3 cm or larger, surgical treatment should be considered. Currently, minimally invasive treatment is commonly used, which can be completed within 1 to 2 hours.
