Features: Elastic ring is the next-generation packet-based transmission platform. The RPR technology, developed by the IEEE 802.17 Working Group, incorporates the cost-effectiveness of gigabit Ethernet and the advanced ring protection of SDH. It can effectively carry bursty IP traffic while supporting traditional TDM services. It also features a good bandwidth fairness mechanism and congestion control mechanism. By the end of April 2003, IEEE 802.17 had released version 2.2 of RPR. This book is based on this version. The first chapter of this book reviews the development of metropolitan area transmission network technology. The second chapter introduces background knowledge such as the RPR standardization organization and technical progress. Chapters 3 to 8 discuss RPR technology in detail from aspects such as the MAC reference model and frame structure, MAC data path, RPR topology discovery, fairness of RPR, and physical layer functions and features of RPR. The ninth chapter introduces RPR network management. As data services increasingly become the main type of traffic carried by communication networks, and with the ongoing improvement of IEEE 802.17 standardization efforts, the application of RPR will become more widespread. Just as SDH technology quickly became the mainstream digital transmission technology by replacing PDH technology, RPR may truly open up a new era for data transmission.
