What should be done about neonatal syndrome?

Patient's question:

The nephew was finally born. But before we could even recover from the joy, we were told he has neonatal aspiration syndrome. What is this condition? What should we do?

Doctor's answer:

1. For mild symptoms, treatment is generally not required. In cases of large amounts of vomiting, it is important to keep the child in a side-lying position to prevent aspiration. After vomiting, it usually resolves on its own within 1 to 2 days. Mild cases may require temporary fasting and supportive treatment. Once vomiting subsides within 1 to 2 days, it can resolve on its own. Breastfeeding can be resumed promptly, and the impact on the child's health is usually not significant.
2. For severe vomiting, a 1% sodium bicarbonate solution can be used for gastric lavage. If there is fluid and electrolyte imbalance, it should be corrected. Appropriate fluid replacement should be administered. Treatment method and effectiveness: Take 12 milliliters of 5% sodium bicarbonate solution and mix it with 18 milliliters of normal saline to prepare a 2% sodium bicarbonate solution (0 milliliters).
3. If vomiting is frequent and the vomit contains meconium or appears coffee-colored, it is necessary to fast. Supportive treatment and symptomatic treatment should be provided.
