What causes semen to fail to liquefy

Patient's question:

What should I do if the semen does not liquefy? Will it affect a man's fertility? Also, I would like to ask what causes the liquefaction of semen.

Doctor's answer:

The semen does not liquefy, which is often caused by cold congelation, heat consumption, phlegm obstruction, or blood stasis. The common etiology and pathogenesis include the following:
① Insufficient congenital kidney yang, or lack of nourishment in later life, severe illness leading to physical weakness, or damage to kidney yang, as well as external invasion by cold pathogens that harm kidney yang, can all cause semen to congeal in coldness and fail to vaporize.
② Excessive indulgence in alcohol, sex, and sexual activity, frequent overexertion, or excessive mental strain, or the transformation of the five emotions into fire, can all deplete kidney yin. Yin deficiency with excess fire scalds body fluids, making semen thick and unliquefiable.
