What causes pediatric hernia?

Patient's question:

My baby was born with a hernia, and for this issue, my husband and I have been very upset and troubled. Now that the baby is starting to feel pain and has reached the stage where treatment can be considered, the doctor said surgery is needed. I would like to ask, what causes pediatric hernias?

Doctor's answer:

Pediatric inguinal hernia is one of the most common diseases in pediatric surgery and hernia surgery, mainly including congenital inguinal hernia and umbilical hernia. It is a change caused by congenital local skin weakness. A diet rich in fiber is recommended to prevent constipation. Children under one year old are treated conservatively, while those over one year old undergo surgical treatment. Pediatric inguinal hernia can be treated surgically, but there may be occasional recurrences after surgery. If a child is crying uncontrollably and the hernia lump cannot retract, it may indicate an inguinal hernia strangulation, and emergency medical attention should be sought immediately.
