Is prenatal screening for Down syndrome necessary?

Patient's question:

Just found out I'm about a month pregnant. I remember my friends had done the Down syndrome screening before pregnancy, but it seems my doctor didn't ask me to do it. So I want to know if the Down syndrome screening is mandatory during pregnancy? What are the risks if I don't do it?

Doctor's answer:

During pregnancy, we must undergo a Down syndrome screening. If we do not have the screening, we cannot rule out the possibility of having a Down syndrome baby. Down syndrome babies are born with intellectual disabilities and cannot be cured. If the Down syndrome baby is in a high-risk state, we need to have an amniocentesis. Once the Down syndrome baby is confirmed, we need to terminate the pregnancy. Avoid taking medicine randomly during pregnancy to prevent abnormal fetal development, stay up late, and be tired, eat more fresh vegetables.
