How to treat scalds from boiling water?

Patient's question:

My young nephew accidentally got scalded by boiling water and is currently being treated in the hospital. Due to improper handling at the time, there may be lingering aftereffects. I'd like to ask what the correct first aid procedure is for boiling water burns, just in case of future needs. How should scalds from boiling water be treated?

Doctor's answer:

1. Do not bandage burns, as it can easily lead to infection and hinder healing.
2. Avoid using "folk remedies" such as applying soy sauce or toothpaste. In reality, they have no effect at all.
3. If no medication is available, first rinse the burn area thoroughly with cool water, then immerse it in cool water for about half an hour. Generally, the earlier the immersion, the lower the water temperature (it should not be below 5°C to avoid frostbite), and the better the effect. However, if the burn has blisters and has burst, avoid immersion to prevent infection. It is recommended to pay close attention to the child's care and provide a light diet.
