Features: Beijing, as a city, shares its relatively independent geographical characteristics and cultural traditions with all other cities in the country and even the world. As the capital of a nation, these differences and distinctions carry a fundamental nature. Unlike the differences between any other cities, centuries of status as the national capital have long made Beijing's characteristics transcend geographical and cultural limitations—it is unique and representative. Many of Beijing's characteristics are a concentration of features from all over the country, and in some aspects, they can even be said to embody the collective traits of the entire Chinese nation. Therefore, Beijing's "locality" is not prominent; it is comprehensive and complex. This cultural diversity is reflected in almost every aspect. For example, Beijing's magnificent architecture is difficult to attribute to a specific region, ethnicity, or style; some traditional elements are also hard to classify within a particular cultural sphere or school. Take language, for instance—it should be highly regional in nature, but even the original "Beijing dialect" included vocabulary from Mongolian and Manchu, and even intermingled with certain southern dialects. Beijing has always been an immigrant city, and its population composition has always been dynamic. Setting aside the distant past, from the Yuan Dynasty's capital to the Ming Dynasty's relocation, from the Manchus' entry into the capital to the Communist Party's arrival, the changes in Beijing's population structure have often been fundamental. Since the reform and opening-up, this has been even more pronounced. Today, as Beijing moves toward becoming an international metropolis, the concept of a "Beijing person" has taken on a completely new meaning. Due to the aforementioned reasons, grasping Beijing as a whole and understanding its people is relatively difficult. Currently, the differences arising from historical, traditional, and regional factors have not entirely disappeared. As a group with a certain regional identity, Beijing people still possess relatively independent characteristics, making the analysis of them meaningful—no matter how challenging. There have been numerous discussions and analyses on Beijing and its people. Many experts and scholars have offered exceptionally insightful perspectives. Figures like Lu Xun, Xiao Qian, Lao She, Shen Congwen, and Liang Shiqiu, as well as contemporary writers such as Deng Youmei, Wang Zengqi, and Wang Anyi, have provided particularly detailed analyses. However, these discussions and analyses, though authoritative and guiding, are generally focused and somewhat fragmented. Grasping Beijing people from historical, cultural, and social transformation perspectives remains a significant challenge to this day. What Kind of People Are Beijingers? aims to comprehensively understand Beijing people by referencing both history and the present. What sets this book apart from others is its greater focus on deep cultural layers and historical changes, with particular attention to exploring how Beijing's unique historical status has shaped and nurtured its people. It must be noted that, as a personal perspective, the book has certain value. On the other hand, since this is a broad topic involving many cultural aspects of our nation and country, we believe there are still many points in this work that warrant further discussion, both in terms of (viewpoints) and methods. This is precisely why we adopt a supportive yet reserved attitude. Additionally, as a "native Beijinger," the author unconsciously conveys a sense of regional pride and superiority in the book. We have adopted a relatively tolerant stance toward this. After all, such pride or superiority has long existed among people of all levels across different regions and areas. The affection or preference people hold for their hometowns and cities can sometimes be subtle—and thus difficult to critique rationally—but perhaps it unintentionally reveals another form of local loyalty. In conclusion, as an attempt, we find the author's efforts commendable. At the same time, some of the book's perspectives are relatively rational and objective, making it helpful for understanding Beijing people. We hope that this discussion or research can delve even deeper. As Beijing and its people become increasingly known to the world, self-awareness, analysis, self-examination, and reflection will undoubtedly contribute to continuous improvement. We believe that as a modern metropolis, Beijing's future will be even brighter and more beautiful, and Beijingers will undoubtedly become more civilized and capable, fully deserving of the title of citizens of the capital. Currently, the differences arising from historical, traditional, and regional factors have not entirely disappeared. As a group with a certain regional identity, Beijing people still possess relatively independent characteristics, making the analysis of them meaningful—no matter how challenging. The author aims to comprehensively understand Beijing people by referencing both history and the present, focusing more on deep cultural layers and historical changes, and emphasizing how Beijing's unique historical status has shaped and nurtured its people!
