Features: This is the fourth edition of the book "Automatic Control Theory," which comprehensively elaborates on the fundamental theories and applications of automatic control. The book is divided into ten chapters, with the first eight chapters focusing on classical control theory and its applications, while the last two chapters introduce linear system theory and optimal control theory in modern control theory. This edition selects the main content from the third edition and strengthens the explanation of fundamental theories and their applications. The book presents the basic concepts of automatic control in an accessible manner, covering the mathematical models of control systems in the time and complex domains, as well as their block diagrams and signal flow graphs. It comprehensively discusses the time-domain analysis, root locus method, frequency-domain analysis, as well as methods for control and design of linear control systems. It provides a detailed discussion on the fundamental theories, mathematical models, stability, steady-state errors, dynamic performance analysis, and digital control of linear discrete systems. In terms of nonlinear control system analysis, it introduces two commonly used methods: phase-plane analysis and describing function analysis, and also provides a relatively detailed explanation of the inverse system method, which is increasingly applied in nonlinear control. The last two chapters systematically elaborate on the state-space analysis and synthesis of linear systems and optimal control methods for dynamic systems, in line with the needs of high-tech development. The two appendices at the end of the book are provided for readers to refer to during their study. In 1985, the book was awarded the title of "Outstanding Teaching Material" by the Ministry of Aeronautical Industry, in 1988 it was recognized as a "National Outstanding Teaching Material," and in 1997 it received the "Second Prize of National Teaching Achievement." The same year, it was approved as a key textbook for the "Nineth Five-Year Plan" national project. This book can serve as a textbook for undergraduate students in fields such as automatic control, industrial automation, electrical automation, instrumentation and testing, mechanical engineering, power engineering, and metallurgy. It is also suitable for self-study reference by engineering technicians working in the field of automatic control.
