Features: Since its first edition in 1994, this book has become a classic textbook for those learning, designing, and using relational databases. It provides rigorous explanations of database design and programming from both theoretical and practical perspectives. Its content includes relational theory, database design, database programming, and run-dump results. Each section starts with fundamental principles and then illustrates them with examples from real systems. This revised edition reflects the overall progress and development trends in the database field over the past six years, with a focus on object-relational models; introduction of new concepts common to systems (such as Oracle, DB2, and Informix); an updated discussion of isolation techniques; and more modern descriptions of run results. Compared to the initial standard, the SQL database language has undergone significant changes, so object-relational models are given special attention. The book also introduces SQL-99 design methods and related principles, methodologies, and major products. The authors are seasoned experts with over 30 years of experience in the database field, rich in teaching and practical experience. The book aims to provide a unified perspective on the diverse thoughts and trends in the database field for readers. It serves as an excellent textbook for those new to database systems, an accessible reference for those who have not paid enough attention to the development of the database field, and a useful reference for designers and programmers to update their knowledge.
