Features: The National English Proficiency Test (NEPT) system is a series of exams designed and developed by the National Education Examination Center. The PETS exam is open to the public and consists of five levels. Its purpose is to reasonably set evaluation standards for each level based on China's actual English teaching and social development needs, using a unified ability scale. It focuses on testing listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills, ensuring the equivalence of exam scores across different sessions at the same level. Gradually, it connects with college admissions, overseas study, and self-study exams, making exam scores more versatile in their application. PETS Level 3 is the middle level among the five, with standards equivalent to the level of high school graduates who have studied public English for two years in a university or self-studied a comparable level of English. Candidates who pass this level can meet the English proficiency requirements for administrative secretaries, executive assistants, general managers, technical personnel, and employees in foreign companies. This textbook contains 19 chapters, each covering a communicative topic. The first page of each chapter briefly describes the expected English communicative level for PETS Level 3 candidates in that chapter. Each chapter is divided into 1-2 units, covering parts of the communicative scenarios related to the topic. The textbook has 27 units, each including:
1. Dialogue: Based on each communicative topic, several dialogue materials are provided. The dialogues aim to be realistic and natural in language, focusing on training candidates' listening and speaking skills. Each dialogue is preceded by a few sentences that set the context, helping candidates understand the dialogue.
2. Text: The text is reading material that reflects the topic. To enhance candidates' interest and aid their comprehension, and to allow them to practice orally by connecting with familiar information, each unit text is followed by 5 questions.
3. Vocabulary and Phrases: This section lists new words and phrases from the dialogues and texts, summarizing their international phonetic symbols, part of speech, Chinese definitions, and Chinese definitions of phrases, in the order they appear in the dialogues and texts.
4. Notes: These notes cover three aspects:
- Introducing relevant cultural background knowledge to deepen candidates' understanding of the dialogues and texts.
- Highlighting difficulties in the dialogues and texts from grammatical and lexical perspectives.
- Providing grammatical analysis of complex sentences and explaining language points and knowledge points with examples, aiming to train candidates to use language flexibly.
5. Exercises: These exercises are designed based on the topics and key points of each unit, allowing candidates to assess their learning progress. The question types align with the exam syllabus to facilitate preparation for PETS Level 3.
6. Supplementary Reading: To help candidates gain a deeper understanding of related topics and improve their reading skills, a supplementary reading passage is provided after each unit.
