Zizhi Tongjian is China's most famous chronological history. It comprises 294 volumes and over 3 million words. It covers 1,362 years, from the 23rd year of King Xianlie of the Zhou Dynasty to the first year of Emperor De of the Later Zhou. It records the history of 16 dynasties, including the Zhou, Qin, Han, Wei, Jin, Southern and Northern Dynasties, Liang, Chen, Sui, Tang, Later Liang, Later Tang, Later Jin, Later Han, and Later Zhou.
The title and preface of Zizhi Tongjian were granted by Emperor Shenzong of the Northern Song Dynasty, meaning "to learn from past events and benefit future governance." The entire work was compiled under the leadership of the great historian Sima Guang over a period of 19 years. The General Catalogue of the Siku Quanshu praises it as "extensive in scope and profound in thought." Since its publication, emperors, officials, and scholars have all regarded Zizhi Tongjian as the definitive version of a classic for practical governance.
