Features: Cambridge International English is a large-scale English textbook written for learners from non-English-speaking countries. It is one of the most popular and influential English teaching materials internationally. The content of the textbook covers four skills—listening, speaking, reading, and writing—while also providing pronunciation training and vocabulary expansion. It particularly emphasizes the development of listening and speaking skills and English communicative competence. The book primarily uses American English, but its content is not limited to any specific country, region, or culture. Instead, it reflects the richness and diversity of English as an international language of communication. Cambridge International English consists of two systematic series, divided into six levels. The Passages series includes two levels and serves as the advanced follow-up to New Interchange. The difficulty level and focus distribution for each level are as follows:
- Beginner Level: Designed for "true" beginners with no English foundation, it explains basic grammar structures, vocabulary, and language functions.
- Level 1: Aimed at learners with elementary English proficiency, it further develops grammar, vocabulary, and pragmatic skills, enabling learners to reach a lower-intermediate to intermediate level.
- Level 2: Targeted at learners with a lower-intermediate English level, it further enhances grammar, vocabulary, and pragmatic skills, aiming to bring learners to an intermediate level.
- Level 3: For learners with an intermediate English level, it focuses on developing the ability to communicate fluently and accurately in English.
- Levels 4/5: For intermediate to advanced English learners, it better cultivates fluency and accuracy in English.
Through a variety of thought-provoking and challenging practice activities, the textbook enables students to further strengthen and develop their communicative abilities in English. In addition to applied skills exercises, the textbook also includes advanced discourse comprehension exercises. Listening exercises include: listening to narratives, advertisements, discussions, and interviews. Reading activities feature authentic reading passages on topics such as cross-cultural communication, lifestyles, and different values.
