Features: The Public English Test System (PETS), designed and administered by the Ministry of Education National Examination Center, is a national English proficiency examination. PETS is China's only multi-level authoritative English testing system for the general public, with no restrictions on age, occupation, or educational background. Individuals can choose to take any level of the examination based on their English proficiency. PETS consists of two relatively independent assessment components: written and oral tests, which comprehensively evaluate candidates' listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. Successful candidates are awarded corresponding English proficiency certificates to meet the needs of English ability assessment and the talent market. The standards for PETS Level 2 and Level 4 exams are used to reform the current college entrance examination and postgraduate entrance examination English tests, respectively. PETS Level 2 and Level 3 exams are used to replace the public English tests in vocational and undergraduate examinations of China's self-taught college system, while PETS Level 5 exam has replaced the English test in the National Foreign Language Proficiency Test (WSK#8226;EPT). With the vigorous development of PETS exams across various regions in China, the Ministry of Education National Examination Center revised the examination syllabus in 2006 based on actual needs. The new syllabus not only provides a detailed introduction to the design background, level standards, examination format, structure, content, and sample papers of PETS but also comes with a VCD containing computer-based oral tests and on-site oral test recordings. To help candidates study and prepare for the exams more effectively and targetedly, the Ministry of Education National Examination Center has also organized the compilation of National English Test System Standard Course (2006 Edition). The above-mentioned examination syllabus and standard course series are exclusively published and distributed by Higher Education Press under the authorization of the Ministry of Education National Examination Center.
