How is early-stage benign prostatic hyperplasia usually treated?

Patient's question:

I have been sick for a while. Recently, I often have urinary urgency, frequent urination, and blood in my urine, which makes me feel very painful. Please ask the doctor how to treat early-stage benign prostatic hyperplasia in general.

Doctor's answer:

1. Mild hyperplasia does not require treatment.
2. Estrogen therapy: Oral ethinyl estradiol, three times a day, for 1 to 3 weeks. For severe acute urinary retention or difficulty urinating, the initial dose can be slightly higher, or use estradiol valerate for intramuscular injection, once every 5 to 7 days.
3. During acute urinary retention, acupuncture can be performed at points such as Guanyuan, Qihai, Sanyinjiao, and Yanglingquan. Catheterization should be used to eliminate urinary retention, and the catheter should be retained to gradually empty the bladder.
4. Surgical treatment: If the prostate hyperplasia is significant, there have been multiple episodes of acute urinary retention, a large amount of residual urine, urinary tract infection, impaired renal function, and the condition does not improve with the aforementioned treatments, a prostatectomy should be considered.
