Features: One of The New Yorker's proudest characteristics is the long-standing tradition it has maintained through a stable editorial policy (for a magazine). This is both an advantage and a disadvantage—on one hand, it represents an old-fashioned gentlemanly style; on the other, it carries an air of outdated clichés. The New Yorker has never been a purely literary magazine. Current affairs and domestic and international politics have always been significant content. It is no longer a magazine primarily known for humor. Except for cartoons, it has rarely published humorous articles in recent years. The two subsequent editors after Shawn, Robert Gottlieb and Tina Brown, made many changes to the magazine. The current style of The New Yorker is much livelier than in the past. The magazine's City Calendar lists a week's worth of cultural events in and around New York, including films, theater, art exhibitions, concerts, photography shows, and dance performances. Then there is the retained classic column City Topics, which primarily features short commentaries on current affairs and politics. Other essential columns include fiction, poetry, and reviews, such as book reviews, film reviews, and music reviews. Other sections consist of feature articles, often including a "Letter from Abroad" and a special report written by a so-called "freelance journalist."
