Features: The Yi ethnic group is one of the most populous and widely distributed ethnic groups in southwestern China. It has a population of approximately 6.57 million, primarily residing in the four provinces (regions) of Yunnan, Sichuan, Guizhou, and Guangxi. Due to the numerous subgroups within the Yi ethnic group, their traditional clothing is also diverse, featuring vibrant colors. It not only differs by gender, age, formal wear, and casual wear but also includes specialized attire such as wedding costumes, mourning garments, priestly robes, and war uniforms. In class-based societies, the hierarchical system of social stratification is also reflected in clothing. Historically, the Yi people have held strong clan consciousness, with numerous subgroups, vast territorial ranges, complex natural environments, varied types of production and economic activities, and mutual influences between ethnic groups. As a result, Yi clothing has developed distinct regional characteristics in terms of material, style, accessories, and patterns. On one hand, it strongly reflects its traditional features, while on the other hand, it also demonstrates the mutual influence and penetration of different cultures. Every aspect of Yi clothing reflects the ancient and splendid history, as well as the rich and profound culture of the Yi ethnic group.
