Features: Aesthetics, as a science that studies the general laws and principles of beauty in nature, society, and the field of art, focuses on exploring major propositions such as the essence of beauty, the relationship between art and reality, and the general laws of artistic creation. Throughout the long course of human civilization, the pursuit and exploration of the laws of beauty have poured generations of sages and talented individuals into sweat and blood. Among the vast Western classics, selecting outstanding works and providing concise introductions is indeed a beneficial endeavor to guide people in navigating the profound ocean of aesthetics.
Jiangxi People's Publishing House, after publishing annotated introductions to renowned works in Western psychology, law, pedagogy, and philosophy, has now released An Introduction to Famous Works of Western Aesthetics. This is an extensive academic foundation project, drawing on the essence of foreign scholarship and serving as a meritorious act that contributes to the construction of Chinese culture. This is a high-quality, academically valuable, and accessible series that aids in popularizing knowledge. It is also a book that accumulates culture and helps readers understand Western scholarship. Therefore, it deserves careful study and appreciation.
An Introduction to Famous Works of Western Aesthetics includes 88 renowned works on aesthetics, authored by scholars from dozens of countries and spanning a time span of 2,400 years. Each work is preceded by a brief introduction to the author's life and achievements, making it easier to understand the content of the works after reading these background notes. The book extensively covers the representative works of nearly 90 great Western thinkers, many of which have not yet been translated into Chinese. Thus, the selection, study, and writing of concise annotations for these works have been an enormous effort, embodying the sweat and wisdom of dozens of researchers. Striving to preserve the essence and style of the original works is precisely what the Introduction intentionally pursues and embodies its distinctive features. In many introductions, the highlights of the masterpieces—such as their significant ideas, innovative insights, memorable quotes, and aphorisms—are preserved in this book. For example, chapters like Longinus's On the Sublime, Hegel's Aesthetics, and Nietzsche's The Birth of Tragedy.
This 580,000-word book essentially encapsulates representative works from the great masterpieces of Western aesthetics throughout history. The commentary remains true to the original essence while reflecting modern perspectives. The editors are aptly suited to serve as the competent "guides" leading researchers and readers through the works of Western aesthetics.
Due to differences in the academic backgrounds and competencies of the authors, some introductions may appear slightly thin or weak. Some articles offer only "narration," while others provide critical evaluations of the selected works, reflecting personal insights, and some even briefly discuss the social impact of the works, which is more helpful to readers than mere "narration without commentary." Guided by the "guide," readers can purposefully seek treasures in the treasure trove of aesthetics.
The book includes a high-value introduction to the history of aesthetics, with a brief introduction to each original author, which is beneficial. However, most introductions are overly simplistic, merely serving as "a list," and there are not many chapters with distinctive features. In my opinion, the works on aesthetics by these famous authors should be listed separately, with a focus on evaluating their aesthetic research careers and contributions. Additionally, the status of the selected articles in the author's aesthetic career should be introduced. If vivid achievements and struggles in their academic research can be highlighted to add some "personality," it will enhance the book's "charm" and "appeal," allowing readers to more deeply appreciate their aesthetic creations, which would undoubtedly be beneficial.
