In the early days of Legend, the company did not yet have the "Legend" brand. The name "Legend" came from its flagship product, the "Legend Chinese Character System." As early as 1968, the Display Group of Room 6, Institute of Computing Technology, first implemented Chinese character display on the 717 machine. Later, it developed further on the SK-1 light pen graphics display. In terms of text input, they proposed using contextual association to assist computer-based Chinese character input, known as the associative input method. After the 748 Project Conference in 1974, the Input Group of Room 6, Institute of Computing Technology, conducted research on Chinese character processing. In 1979, they developed the "111 Chinese Information Processing Experimental System," which won the Second Prize of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. It addressed technical issues such as Chinese character input, output, and display, and provided Chinese character processing services for research projects like machine translation and information retrieval. Subsequently, the Legend input method evolved into the Chinese character graphics microcomputer Lx-80, which was licensed for the production of 600 units. In June 1984, with support from other companies, the development work to port LX-80 to PCs as the Legend Handwriting Card was initiated, and it was largely completed by the end of the year. In November 1984, the Computing Institute decided to establish a company led by figures such as Wang Shuhe, Liu Chuanzhi, and Zhang Zuxiang, with Ni Guangnan appointed as the company's chief engineer in December, bringing all the technical expertise of the handwriting card into the company. The company adopted a one-stop approach for development, production, sales, and service, and the Legend Handwriting Card was launched into the market in April 1985. After the Legend Handwriting Card was introduced, the Computing Institute Company established a business strategy centered around it as the flagship product, leading the entire sales chain. From proposing the associative input method to the official product launch, it took over a decade, truly embodying the saying "ten years of hard work for a single sword." P36-37
