Features: In China, corporate governance has currently attracted widespread attention, but this focus is largely limited to a rigid extension of Western theories—adopting foreign theories to explain China's economic phenomena or data. It is an undeniable fact that the field of economic management lacks independent theoretical innovation. Although many Western scholars also place great importance on China's corporate governance, most of them are not fully aware of China's national conditions. In the "prescriptions" they offer for economic reforms, including the reform of modern enterprise systems, they still rigidly apply Western theoretical models. The outcome is naturally bound to lead to incorrect conclusions and viewpoints, and it is inevitable that they will mislead a significant portion of China's macroeconomic policy makers and senior corporate management. The School of Management at Sun Yat-sen University, the Sino-German Corporate Governance Research Center at Sun Yat-sen University, and the Nanfang Daily jointly organized the "Corporate Governance, Enterprise Performance, and Economic Growth" Sino-German Forum on Chinese Practices on September 29, 2005. The forum conducted in-depth discussions on topics such as the connotation of corporate governance, the role of corporate governance in state-owned and private (family-owned) enterprises, how to improve corporate governance systems, and how the state can effectively regulate state-owned assets. The book presents to readers 14 selected papers from all submissions to the forum.
