Will a hernia heal on its own?

Patient's question:

A few days ago, while I was bathing my child, I noticed a small lump on their abdomen. Later, I took them to a hospital to get checked. I would like to ask if an inguinal hernia can heal on its own?

Doctor's answer:

Pediatric hernia is a relatively common congenital disease. Usually, a diet containing fiber is needed to prevent constipation. Conservative treatment for children under one year old typically involves the use of a hernia ring. However, it is not completely effective. Surgical treatment is recommended for children over one year old. Pediatric hernia can be surgically repaired. Occasionally, recurrence may occur after surgery. If the child cries excessively and the hernia cannot be retracted, it may indicate an impending strangulated hernia. Immediate emergency care should be sought. Wishing you good health.
