What should be done if the risk of Down syndrome exceeds the preset screening standard?

Patient's question:

During the prenatal screening for Down syndrome at the maternity and pediatric hospital, the results were slightly above the normal range. They suggested I have an amniocentesis, but can I avoid it? All other tests are normal.
What kind of help I need: I want to keep the child, but I don’t want to have an amniocentesis. What should I do!

Doctor's answer:

This situation should still be addressed, as once a child is born with Down syndrome, it is very poor guidance for the family and the child itself: the risk of amniocentesis is very small and can be almost negligible. Currently, there is no effective treatment. For the child, attention should be paid to preventing infections. Comprehensive measures, including medical and social services, should be taken to provide long-term patient education and training for intellectually disabled children, enabling them to transition to regular schools and develop certain job skills.
