Their marriage is opposed by Clem's mother, so they move out after getting married. Later, due to Eustacia's mistake, Clem's mother tragically dies. This secret is later discovered by Clem, leading to a fierce argument. Seeing her dream of going to Paris shattered, Eustacia seeks help from the old man to escape. On a stormy night, they both fall into the rapid river.
