Features: The Taihang Mountains are an important mountain range in eastern China. They extend north to the Yanshan Mountains, south to the banks of the Yellow River, west to the Loess Plateau, and east to the North China Plain. They run in a northeast-southwest direction, covering over 400 kilometers in length and over 100 kilometers in width. The Taihang Mountains are the eastern edge of the second step in China's topography and also the eastern boundary of the Loess Plateau. They have been known since ancient times as the "spine of the world" and the "great defense between east and west." The Taihang Mountains are majestic, with towering peaks, deep gorges, imposing passes, and abrupt cliffs. They are also beautiful, with numerous rivers, abundant flora and fauna, and diverse natural landscapes. They are profound, having given birth to many ancient myths and legends, preserving traces of ancient human activity, and are dotted with temples, monasteries, ancient pagodas, and tombs across the north and south, as well as countless revolutionary relics and artifacts. These all tell the enduring history of the Taihang Mountains and shine a light on their brilliant culture. The Taihang Mountains are like a giant exclamation mark written on the land of China, full of heroic and masculine energy; they are also like an eternal monument, with every stone and rock inscribed with the spirit of the Chinese nation standing united against external aggression and remaining unyielding.
The picturesque Taihang Mountains
The Taihang Mountains are an ancient yet young mountain range. Their antiquity lies in the fact that since the Cretaceous period about 70 million years ago, the western part of North China's landmass gradually rose due to the Yanshan orogeny, forming the ancient Taihang Mountains. Their youth lies in the fact that the Taihang region underwent another large-scale uplift about two to three million years ago, combined with the erosive action of rivers, gradually shaping the current topography of the Taihang Mountains. The Taihang Mountains are also a vibrant mountain range, and this vitality is reflected in the ongoing uplift and erosion processes in the Taihang region today.
The terrain of the Taihang Mountains slopes higher in the north and lower in the south, with steeper slopes in the east and gentler slopes in the west. The mountain ridges generally reach altitudes of 1,500 to 2,000 meters, with peaks above 2,000 meters including Xiaowutai Mountain, Lingshan Mountain, and Baishi Mountain in Hebei Province, and Hengshan Mountain, Taibai Mountain, Nantuo Mountain, and Yangqu Mountain in Shanxi Province, as well as Dongling Mountain at the border between Hebei and Beijing. Xiaowutai Mountain in the northern section of the Taihang Mountains, with an altitude of 2,882 meters, is the highest peak in the range.
The terrain on both sides of the Taihang Mountains is highly asymmetrical. The western side is long and gentle, with a smaller relative elevation difference, gradually transitioning to the Loess Plateau. The eastern side is short and steep, with a larger elevation difference, forming near-1,000-meter fault cliffs in many areas. From the perspective of the North China Plain, the Taihang Mountains appear extremely majestic. The great Tang Dynasty poet Li Bai once praised them in a poem: "The winding path climbs the mountain steeply, the moonlit cliffs rise to the heavens."
The Taihang Mountains have abundant topographical resources, including several major types such as quartz sandstone, metamorphic rock, dolomite, limestone, and volcanic rock formations. Quartz sandstone formations, also known as Zhangshi Rock formations, are primarily distributed in the middle and southern sections of the Taihang Mountains, represented by the Zhangshi Rock Scenic Area. The terrain is steep, with complex and varied landscapes. Metamorphic rock formations are mainly found in the northern section of the middle Taihang Mountains, represented by the Wuyuesai Scenic Area and Tuoliang Scenic Area. The mountains are high and the valleys deep, with numerous rapids and waterfalls. Dolomite and limestone formations, also known as karst formations, are distributed in the northern section of the Taihang Mountains, represented by the 100-kilometer gorges of Yeshanpo and the steamed bun stones of Baishi Mountain. The mountains are high and the valleys deep, with flats and complex terrain. Volcanic rock formations are found in Xiaowutai Mountain in the northern section of the Taihang Mountains.
