Obesity is predicted to be a prevalent epidemic and a killer of human health in the 21st century. Currently, obesity is trending globally. It is estimated that by 2010, there will be 130 million people suffering from obesity in the entire Asia-Pacific region. In China, the number of overweight individuals has reached 22.4, and the number of obese individuals is 3.01. Experts warn that the number of obese patients in China may have exceeded 70 million. Although the incidence of obesity in China is much lower than that in Western populations (generally around 20 in Europe and America), the growth rate is relatively fast, especially in the late 1990s. The incidence of overweight and obesity in China shows certain patterns: the northern regions are higher than the southern regions; large cities are higher than medium and small cities; medium and small cities are higher than rural areas; and developed regions are higher than underdeveloped regions. Clearly, overweight and obesity are closely related to economic development, living standards, and lifestyle.
Obesity not only affects physical appearance but also brings inconvenience to daily life. More importantly, it easily leads to various complications, accelerates aging, and shortens life expectancy. Medical statistics show that if a person over 45 exceeds the normal weight standard by 10%, their lifespan will decrease by 29 days for every 0.5 kg over the standard. The World Health Organization's Obesity Society has called on obesity to be recognized as both an independent disease and a risk factor for type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, hypertension, stroke, and certain cancers, with its harmfulness being four times that of smoking. Recently, the International Obesity Conference reported that the number of deaths worldwide due to obesity is more than twice that due to hunger, and thus obesity has been listed by the World Health Organization as one of the top ten risk factors contributing to disease burden.
Overweight and obesity have become a serious health issue threatening the health and quality of life of the Chinese people. To prioritize health, one must stay away from obesity. How can one stay away from obesity? First, through scientific diet and increased physical activity, the overweight population should return to a normal state and prevent overweight individuals from becoming obese. If preventive measures and interventions are taken in a timely manner, it is entirely possible to slow down the rise in the incidence of overweight and obesity, which is of great significance for chronic disease control.
Controlling diet does not mean starvation but rather choosing a reasonable diet—in short, learning to eat scientifically.
