Chapter 19
I said without hesitation.
Jake looked up at me in surprise, “Tobias, you’ve been involved in this plan from the very beginning.”

“I have,” Marco said, “Of course, I do. But I thought you were a powerful, ambitious Yeerk killer. Now, are you suddenly scared?”
I said,
Casey nodded. “It’s hard to stand by when others are risking their lives,” she said, “I know how you feel. But you’ve gone on adventures alone many times.”
Jake was always annoyed by someone who doubted everything once it was decided. Usually, it was Marco who bothered him.
Trapped in a fish’s body? Just thinking about it made me sick. Spending the rest of my life in a fish’s body? Compared to that, being trapped in an eagle’s body seemed much better.
Since that night, since we saw the Andalites land on the construction site, life had become so strange. I circled higher and higher, until I could see the entire lake and most of the surrounding area. The park ranger hadn’t shown up yet. Not yet. I wasn’t sure if Jake was right, but maybe the Yeerks would move to another lake. Maybe they already had. Just then, the eagle I’d rescued from the cage landed on a branch directly below me. She was staring at me. I could see her eyes following me as I soared across the sky. I roughly knew why she was watching me—it was because I was on her territory. Eagles are very territorial. They don’t want strangers coming in and taking away their best prey. But I felt there was something else—she wanted to pair up with me. I didn’t know how I knew, but I did. She wanted me to fly down to her.
Some people think eagles only mate in one season, while others believe they mate at different times in their lives. I don’t know which is right. All I know for sure is that I haven’t wanted to start a pair bond with anyone yet, especially not with an eagle. But I still had a feeling—that I belonged to her world. I looked around. Once this mission was over, I wouldn’t have to come onto her territory anymore, and I’d be very happy. She confused me.
Suddenly, there was movement. I got distracted. A truck! A jeep! They were rolling down the road. They were within a mile and moving fast. I frantically searched for my friends. There they were! I flapped my wings and swooped down toward them.
They ran toward the cave. But crawling into it in human form was difficult. The wolf’s hide was thick, protecting them from scratches by the nearby bushes. Pah-pah-pah! Helicopters flew over the trees! Too fast. My friends were still struggling to crawl into the cave. A helicopter flew directly toward them.
