Features: Exquisite wood carvings are the primary decorative technique in Ming-style furniture, embodying infinite aesthetic meaning—ethereal and radiant. Their aesthetic value far exceeds the intrinsic worth of traditional furniture, truly a marvel of Chinese classical art. Ming-style furniture represents the essence of Chinese classical furniture, with its designs and craftsmanship reaching the pinnacle of perfection. The finest pieces were primarily used in imperial courts, noble residences, and the homes of high-ranking scholars and literati. Made during the mid-Ming to early-Qing dynasties, spanning over 200 years, classic Ming-style furniture dominates the market due to its expensive materials, exquisite craftsmanship, refined styles, and rarity.
Having long been engaged in the collection and study of carved Ming-style furniture, I have gradually accumulated insights over the years. Without hesitation, I have compiled this book, featuring photographs of my personal collection (including pieces not owned by me) and accompanying descriptive text for each work, titled The Carving Art of Ming-Style Furniture, intending to share it with fellow scholars for discussion. Therefore, the content of this article primarily focuses on the carving art of classic Ming-style furniture, offering my humble perspective.
Observing the artistic forms of Ming-style furniture carvings, I believe three prominent aesthetic principles can be summarized:
1. The Pivotal Point: This refers to the strategic placement of decorative motifs in prominent areas of the furniture, giving it a "life-giving gaze" and imbuing it with vitality. This decoration is often found above the backrest on chair frames, striving to create a dynamic and transparent aesthetic effect with a clear focal point.
2. The Flowing Line: This refers to the carving around the aprons of tables and desks, giving the furniture a sense of movement while at rest, as if encircled by a "flowing ribbon" to produce a sense of fluid beauty. These furniture legs, feet, and shoulders are often carved with beast masks, while the aprons feature patterns such as crystal, phoenix, flowers, and plants, all exceptionally lively and vibrant.
3. The Skillful Rhythm: This refers to the carvings on furniture that aim to express luxury and intricacy, achieving a aesthetic effect. Chinese traditional furniture, in terms of overall form, emphasizes stability, dignity, and strict geometric precision, but its carvings have a distinctly different character. Whether depicting landscapes, flowers, birds, animals, insects, human stories, or mythological tales, they are generally characterized by passion and exuberance. This stands in stark contrast to the dignified and solemn forms of Ming-style furniture, adding a touch of lively spirit to the serene shapes.
In summary, carving plays a pivotal role in the overall art of Ming-style furniture. It is an integral component of Ming-style furniture, reflecting the brilliance of its design aesthetics and transmitting the aesthetic inclinations of the Ming and Qing dynasties' craftsmanship. It is a glorious creation of Chinese carving art forms and another invaluable legacy of Chinese culture.
