Ruan Yuan himself stated that his "first ancestor, named Yan, moved from Huai'an Shanyang in Jiangnan during the reign of Emperor Shenzong of Ming Dynasty to Yangzhou Jiangdu, and later moved to Gongdaoqiao in the northern suburbs of the city in the late Ming Dynasty. In the 50th year of the Kangxi reign (), he took root in Yizheng, as seen in the Biography of Taofu Lord Zhuo'an in Volume 1 of the Second Collection of Yan Jing Shi. It is also said: 'Ruan Yuan was merely registered as a native of Yizheng, but he was indeed a resident of the northern suburbs of Yangzhou,' as seen in the Preface to the Record of Xiao Zhi in the Northern Lake of Yangzhou in Volume 2 of the Second Collection of Yan Jing Shi. Additionally, modern scholar Ruan Yanxiu's article "On the Correctness of Ruan Yuan's Native Place" published in the Journal of Yangzhou Normal University in Issue 3 of 1986 also clarifies this, and can be referenced). In the 54th year of the Qianlong reign (1789), he passed the imperial examination and served in the courts of the Qianlong, Jiaqing, and Daoguang reigns, holding multiple positions as regional governors and educational officials, as well as serving as Vice Minister of the Ministry of War, Ministry of Rites, and Ministry of Revenue, and was appointed as Grand Secretary of the Ti Ren Ge.
