How to prevent hernia?

Patient's question:

My baby was found to have a hernia when he was over 50 days old. We used a hernia belt for 2 months, and it healed, but then it came back after 3 months. I'm wondering if it's been lingering or if it's a recurrence. So, I'd like to ask how hernias can be prevented?

Doctor's answer:

Preventing hernias requires attention to several points. For elderly men in general, the first thing to focus on is strengthening abdominal wall exercises. Generally, maintaining a healthy weight and engaging in appropriate exercise can significantly reduce the occurrence of hernias, or at least delay their onset. However, for patients with weaker abdominal walls, if they also neglect a balanced diet, the likelihood of developing hernias tends to be higher. Additionally, a very obvious factor is long-term smoking, as well as recurrent asthma or pulmonary diseases, which exert considerable pressure on the abdomen. Such patients are also more prone to developing hernias.
