Features: Each dynasty had its own laws, but this work focuses specifically on the Tang and Ming dynasties for analysis, as other laws were not discussed. Why were the laws of all dynasties lost or missing, yet these two remain intact? The Tang Code is a culmination of all previous laws, refined by renowned scholars through careful deliberation and adjustments, free from bias or contradictions. Moreover, as a book on criminal justice, it often reveals a compassionate and benevolent spirit, subtly reflected in its words. Thus, while other laws have been lost to time, this one stands alone, as if protected by divine forces. However, the Siku Tiyao also states that the Tang Code strictly adheres to the principles of ritual, ensuring fairness in its judgments. It further notes that the Tang Code thoroughly examines historical systems, with comprehensive provisions, making it a valuable source for understanding the origins of Chinese law. The Ming Code, though influenced by the Tang, underwent extensive revisions, with the intention of surpassing it, yet it fell far short.
