Features: The academic conference "Immigration and Local Society: Socio-Cultural Changes in Overseas Chinese Towns," jointly organized by the Department of Anthropology at Sun Yat-sen University and the Department of Sociology at The University of Hong Kong, was held at Sun Yat-sen University on June 16-17, 2001. The main topics of the conference were the impact of overseas immigrants on their hometowns and the socio-cultural changes in overseas Chinese towns themselves. The papers presented by the participants covered widely discussed issues in academia, such as comparative studies of overseas Chinese towns, ancestor worship and cultural capital, the influence of immigrants on the dialect of overseas Chinese towns, the development of overseas Chinese towns and immigration, gender relations in immigration, overseas Chinese farm communities, and folk customs in overseas Chinese towns. It was unanimously agreed that when studying overseas Chinese and immigrants, attention should not only be paid to the situation of immigrants in the place of settlement but also to the influence of immigrants on the social construction of their place of origin. The book presented before you is the collection of papers from this academic conference.
