1. Considering the requirements of credits and class hours, this textbook can only select representative philosophical masterpieces from each historical period that reflect the essence of the times as teaching materials. From pre-Qin to modern times, it involves 48 philosophers and 50 works. The selected texts are kept as complete as possible, with excessively long ones appropriately excerpted. For a few without complete chapters, they are classified by topics and compiled. The selected content also considers coordination with the teaching of "History of Chinese Philosophy" courses.
2. Before each original text, there is an "Author Introduction," briefly introducing the author's life, historical background, major academic achievements and contributions, the status of the selected work in their writings and philosophical thought, and an introduction to the version and circulation of the relevant works from a historiographical perspective.
3. After each original text, there are segmental annotations. The annotations strive for simplicity and accuracy, with textual research omitted. Uncommon characters are annotated with pronunciation and meaning, and difficult sentences are appropriately explained.
4. After each lesson, there is a "Brief Analysis," which not only clarifies the central idea of the text, hints at the main categories, propositions, and philosophical implications but also divides the text into several sections according to its logical structure, analyzing the ideological connotations of each section and explaining the connections between the text and its context. The "Brief Analysis" is concise, with an average length of no more than 2,000 words per lesson. It serves as a bridge for students to further grasp the philosophical content after they have understood the text on the surface.
