Patient's question:
I'm only in my early 20s, but I've noticed that I don't have morning erections anymore. Recently, when I've been masturbating, I've found that I simply can't get an erection anymore. What is going on here? Is it erectile dysfunction? It's terrifying. Could varicocele lead to erectile dysfunction?Doctor's answer:
It is possible for this condition to occur. The expansion and tortuosity of the spermatic vein within the scrotum are referred to as varicocele. The cause is due to the long course of the spermatic veins, which experience the highest pressure, as well as scarring or incompetence of the venous valves. Clinical symptoms include a sense of swelling or heaviness in the affected scrotal area, with symptoms worsening after exertion or prolonged standing and improving after lying down and resting. It may lead to testicular atrophy, interfere with testicular function, and result in increased sexual function and fertility. Therefore, there is still a possibility of developing erectile dysfunction, so it is recommended to seek early treatment.Surgery is generally the preferred treatment. Microsurgical ligation of the spermatic vein is the most common and effective method for primary varicocele, and the earlier the surgery is performed, the better the outcome.
