Patient's question:
I had a glucose tolerance test at the hospital. Fasting blood sugar was 5.6, one hour after drinking glucose it was 9.2, and two hours later it was 7.7.At home, I tested my blood sugar with a glucose meter. Fasting blood sugar is between 4.9-5.3, and post-meal blood sugar is between 6.2-7.5. Do I need to take insulin to control it?
Doctor's answer:
The current diagnostic criteria for diabetes recommended by the World Health Organization are:1. Venous blood glucose level greater than or equal to 11.1 mmol/L (200 mg/dL) at any time;
2. Venous blood glucose level greater than or equal to 7.0 mmol/L (126 mg/dL) after an overnight fast;
3. Blood glucose level greater than or equal to 11.1 mmol/L (200 mg/dL) at 2 hours during an oral glucose tolerance test.
