Features: The Jinwen Yinding·Chunqiu–Zhou Dynasty Volume is accompanied by the Shang–Zhou Jinwen Dadian Zifen Biao. Through exhaustive and rigorous collation of characters used in Shang–Zhou bronze inscriptions, 5,962 characters have been identified. This table is based on the inscriptions of bronze inscriptions from the Jinwen Yinding·Shang–Xia–Western Zhou Volume and the Jinwen Yinding·Chunqiu–Zhou Dynasty Volume, and utilizes the full-text search function of the Jinwen Electronic Database to list the chronological distribution and frequency of occurrence of these bronze inscriptions. It provides useful data for the study of bronze inscriptions and the research of the writing system. Jinwen Yinding (divided into the Shang–Xia–Western Zhou and Chunqiu–Zhou Dynasty volumes) is a reference book for searching bronze inscriptions of the Shang–Zhou period. It is also a reference book for unearthed literature. Bronze inscriptions are the main material textual evidence of the Shang–Zhou era and hold significant academic research value in multiple aspects. Since the Han Dynasty, especially since the Qing Dynasty, numerous scholars have conducted fruitful research and interpretation on bronze inscriptions, achieving substantial results. However, these research outcomes have yet to be comprehensively compiled. Particularly due to the structural characteristics of ancient characters, traditional character methods have faced insurmountable obstacles, making it impossible to fully implement contextual searches at the character level for bronze inscriptions as with transmitted texts. The authors of this book—the China Writing Research and Application Center, a key research base for humanities and social sciences under the Ministry of Education—have, based on the integration of computer information processing technology into the study of bronze inscriptions, leveraged the convenience provided by the Jinwen Corpus and the Jinwen Character Library to finally compile this Jinwen Yinding. At the same time, the book ensures the following features:
1. Comprehensive Collection of Materials. The inscriptions of bronze inscriptions included in this book cover 13,271 bronze inscriptions (9,916 from the Shang–Xia–Western Zhou period and 3,255 from the Chunqiu–Zhou Dynasty) that were either transmitted or unearthed and published by the first half of 2001. This surpasses any previous specialized books on bronze inscriptions.
2. Maximizing Information within a Concise Format. The book is divided into three main parts: Interpretation, Indexing, and Character Search. The Interpretation section includes the collation and punctuation of bronze inscriptions, merging inscriptions from the same object into a single entry. Below each entry, the names of all objects with the same inscription are listed, followed by the important bibliographic references for each object. The Indexing section lists all sentences containing each character in the Interpretation. The Character Search section indicates the page numbers of all single characters in the Indexing. Through this arrangement, repetition is minimized, and a retrieval system is established that efficiently searches for contexts at various levels—sentences, entries, objects, and bibliographic references—within a concise textual volume.
3. Comprehensive Retrieval Methods. By developing the Three-Level Full-Phonetic Code Retrieval System suitable for ancient character forms and Liguoding characters, a large number of previously unsearchable ancient character forms have been incorporated into the effective scope of retrieval. This is supplemented by stroke-based searches, solving the challenge of single-character retrieval for bronze inscriptions. As a result, searches at all levels become simple, effective, and easy to operate.
