Ernest Hemingway (1899–1961)
American novelist. Nobel Prize in Literature laureate for 1954. Born into a family of country doctors, he loved fishing, hunting, music, and painting from a young age. He served as a driver for the Red Cross during World War I and later worked as a long-term European correspondent, covering the Second World War and the Spanish Civil War as a journalist. In his later years, he suffered from various illnesses and severe depression, which worsened despite multiple treatments. He ultimately took his own life with a hunting rifle. His early novels, such as The Sun Also Rises (1927) and A Farewell to Arms (1927), became major works representing America's "Lost Generation." In the 1930s and 1940s, he shifted his focus to portraying anti-Fascist fighters who broke free from disillusionment and pessimism, fighting bravely and sacrificing themselves for the cause (play The Fifth Column (1938), novel For Whom the Bell Tolls (1940)). In the 1950s, he continued to develop the theme of resilience from his 1920s short stories The Indomitable Man and The Fifth Million Dollars, creating the "tough guy" character embodied by Santiago in his novella The Old Man and the Sea (1950). In terms of art, his concise and powerful style, along with his masterful use of various modernist techniques, sparked a "literary revolution" in American literature and influenced many Western and European writers.
