Features: The format and style of this collection primarily focus on selected essays, supplemented by miscellaneous articles and short pieces such as prefaces. Since ancient times, compilers of self-selected collections have favored including their best works, and I am no exception. However, my collection includes not only my best works but also works that were not as successful, along with reflections or "explanations" in the form of essays. Through these, I aim to authentically reflect the traces of the times, academic trends, political situations, social customs, and the different pursuits of scholars across various periods. No one is perfect, nor is there anyone who is entirely correct and holds eternal truths. Liang Qichao, a philosopher of modern times, still dared to openly acknowledge his shortcomings and "was not afraid to challenge his past self with his present self." How about us? Can we avoid mistakes? Writing is the expression of the heart and voice—it is a product of its time, yet it also reflects the essence of the era. In my academic career spanning over forty years, I have experienced the ups and downs of "ten years east and thirty years west." In the first decade and a half, I engaged in teaching and researching ancient Chinese history under the guidance of renowned scholars, gaining a solid foundation in the field. For the following thirty-plus years, I was assigned to teach and research modern Chinese history. My research focuses on modern social thought and culture, the spread of trade ports, and the dissemination of modern civilization, with particular dedication to the Boxer Rebellion. To highlight the content and characteristics of this collection, I have categorized my essays into five sections, each with a descriptive title, hoping to fully express my academic mindset, philosophy, and perspectives.
