Features: Among the fastest-developing art styles of the 20th century, film and television—commonly known as audiovisual art—emerged and rapidly evolved. In line with this swift development, audiovisual education has become a crucial component of art education. The "Audiovisual Art Discipline Foundation Teaching Series" is a systematic textbook designed by the Department of Art at Beijing Normal University for audiovisual art education. Art has accompanied humanity through the earliest primitive eras, becoming a spiritual sanctuary and a refuge for the soul. It embodies the ideals of beauty and symbolizes freedom for people. Art belongs to the masses, to every individual in society. It originates from the people and grows among them, with its highest mission being to serve the public. Audiovisual art is a relatively young art form, leveraging modern technology to become one of the most widely disseminated modern art media. Without the invention of electricity and the development of technologies related to light waves and sound waves, audiovisual art would not exist. At the same time, audiovisual art is also a product of modern industry, and its growth is inseparable from the operation of industrial systems. Therefore, it is a new type of art distinct from any ancient art form. To study audiovisual art, one must start with its nature, understand its fundamental characteristics, and master its basic principles, only then can one truly comprehend audiovisual art and engage in research, teaching, and creative work in this field. Film and television are products of technology and industry. However, the emergence of audiovisual art is not merely a history of modern technological development but also a crystallization of humanity's accumulated artistic achievements. Ancient China had art forms such as lantern shadows, shadow puppets, and marionettes, reflecting people's pursuit of moving images. Classical Chinese theater, poetry, and painting often employed techniques like close-ups, wide shots, and medium shots, as well as montage, providing aesthetic inspiration for the birth and development of audiovisual art. Of course, constrained by social structures and technological levels, the feudal society based on agricultural civilization could not have given rise to audiovisual art. This book aims to use Chinese aesthetics as a starting point to observe the development of Chinese cinema, summarize its successes and failures, and contribute to the establishment of a Chinese audiovisual aesthetic system.
