Features: The protagonist of Invisible Man is a young Black man who strives to gain recognition and wants to "make himself seen." He has tried being a "honest Black man," attempting to find his place in the American industry and become a useful cog in the machine. He has also joined the "Brotherhood," aligning himself with left-wing politics. Every attempt he has made seems to place a Black man in a visible position in American life, but none of these things have allowed him to enter the ideal spiritual civilization he seeks. Therefore, he now prefers to be an underground person.
