The purpose of this watercolor portrait textbook is to help beginners learn the techniques of drawing watercolor portraits through practice. To explain and demonstrate the methods of watercolor portrait painting in a clear and concise manner, the author intentionally illustrates various angles and lighting conditions of portraits during the drawing process. Each portrait is briefly explained, and the feasibility of this method is validated through a series of sketches.
Currently, in the context of art college entrance exam color tests, some higher art colleges have set portrait painting as the subject of the exam, while others use color portrait tests as a criterion to distinguish between superior and inferior students. If a student only knows how to paint watercolor still lifes but cannot paint watercolor portraits, they may be deemed an "inferior student" and still fail to enter their desired institution. Therefore, it is essential to advocate that all art students learn some techniques of watercolor portrait painting.
In the practice of learning watercolor portraits, one must continuously accumulate and master relevant techniques and color mixing principles, including the saturation of colors, the thickness of watercolor paints, etc. Some experiences are difficult to describe in words. During the process of learning watercolor portraits, we must adhere to the principle of first painting the shadows and then the highlights, starting with the whole and moving to the details. Only by following these rules can one achieve greater progress.
