Memories or old friends are like fallen leaves, turning from darkness into light in the autumn of my life, and escaping from light into darkness. When I see them in the light, I can only imagine them in the darkness, relying on those who have turned into light to imagine those who have fled into darkness. I cannot see their true selves in the darkness, only their imagined forms—shifting with my imagination into another kind of light. Is this other light unreal? When darkness hides some leaves, you can still imagine them because your imagination can illuminate the darkness and reveal them, but the imagined leaves are not the ones hidden by the darkness. Yet, this is the only truth I can attain. Even those in the light, when I look at them, what is their true reality? It is merely the truth of my impression, or perhaps just my true impression. Memories and old friends are the same. Whether they turn into light or flee into darkness, they can only become real in my impression. Truth does not exist outside the heart; there is no such thing as a real truth waiting outside the heart in its original form. Truth is sometimes a legend or even a rumor, sometimes a guess, sometimes a dream. They skillfully carve my impressions in the heart. Moreover, while shaping my impressions, they also shape me. Otherwise, what is my truth, and what else can it be? It is these impressions. The accumulation and weaving of these impressions—that is me.
