Features: The painters collected in this volume have begun to enter the mid-Ming Dynasty. Represented by Du Qiong, the teacher of Shen Zhou, landscape painters who inherited the style of the "Four Masters of the Yuan Dynasty" remained active. The phenomenon of literati participating in painting and making it their profession quickly became a trend in economically prosperous Suzhou. Shen Zhou was the leader of the emerging "Wumen School of Painting." Building upon his study of the "Four Masters of the Yuan Dynasty," he traced back to Dong Yuan and Guo Xi, and explored the "Northern School" as well. He excelled at harmoniously integrating various opposing artistic elements, opening up a path of synthesis and expanding the horizons for the new development of literati painting. Meanwhile, his contemporary Zhou Chen continued to paint in the style of Li, Guo, Ma, and Xia from the Song Dynasty, but with a more restrained and elegant approach, foreshadowing the style of Tang Yin. In flower-and-bird painting, Lin Liang used vigorous brushwork for ink wash and expressive painting, embedding folk aesthetic sensibilities within his simple yet unrestrained style. In figure painting, Du Jin represented a more refined and graceful approach, though he studied from Li Gonglin of the Northern Song Dynasty, he leaned toward secular tastes. This volume includes 22 painters and 119 works.
