Features: The Second Collection of Surprising Stories (Er Ke Pa An Qi Jing) is the second collection of colloquial tales created by Ling Mengchu following The First Collection of Surprising Stories. The Second Collection of Surprising Stories comprehensively reflects the turbulent social conditions of the late Ming Dynasty, marked by internal and external crises, increasingly complex and acute social contradictions. These include the psychological imbalance caused by the stark wealth disparity, social unrest stemming from corrupt bureaucratic politics, the rebellion of young men and women against feudal marriage systems, the challenge posed by the emerging merchant class to the traditional order of the four social classes (scholar, farmer, artisan, and merchant), and the rebellion of human desires against heavenly principles and Confucianism, fueled by decadent social mores. It can be said to outline a bleak picture of the declining late Ming society.
Among the stories, The Wandering Traveler's Miraculous Rescue and the Three Saviors of the Sea God reflects the life of merchants, The Starving Scholar's Rise and Fall and the Vengeful Marriage of Jiao Wenji depicts marriage and love, and The Scholar's Stubborn Examination of the Case and the Heroic Female's Enduring Fame exposes the corruption of the officialdom. These are among the most representative and outstanding works. However, The Second Collection of Surprising Stories is permeated with outdated teachings about ghosts, gods, reincarnation, and karmic retribution, and it often embellishes the decadent social mores of the time. These elements have, to varying degrees, impaired the ideological and artistic value of the novel.
