Collation of ancient books is a method of reading ancient books, and any reader of ancient books consciously or unconsciously uses this method. When we read ancient books, we always hope to understand the original meaning of the ancients. The original meaning of the ancients, that is, the true meaning of ancient books, has often been covered with the dust of history. For example, during the long process of copying and engraving ancient books, errors, omissions, inversions, and additions in the text are inevitable; many annotations of later generations are not all trustworthy. The Qing Dynasty scholar Yu Yue once said in the preface to his "Examples of Doubts in Ancient Books": "To hold the books currently transmitted and engraved as the true originals of the ancients is like hearing someone say bamboo shoots are edible and returning to boil the basket." This means that the true appearance and meaning of ancient books often become completely different with the changes of history. Therefore, clearing away this historical dust, restoring the true appearance of ancient books, and seeking the true meaning of ancient books have become the professional work of some scholars (such as annotations of ancient books, collation of ancient texts, etc.); ordinary readers, whenever they open a book on the desk, cannot avoid the labor of dusting and brushing. This is just like identifying goods—besides inspection personnel, ordinary people also need some common sense to recognize their authenticity, superiority, and inferiority. This book aims to study the collation achievements of predecessors and contemporary scholars, summarize some specific methods of reading, and thus help readers of ancient books to truly understand ancient books, discover the errors and mistakes in ancient books, and seek the true meaning of ancient books.
