Features: Rock mechanics is a professional foundational course in many engineering disciplines, including mining engineering, geological engineering, petroleum engineering, hydraulic engineering, railway engineering, highway engineering, geotechnical engineering, and underground engineering. This book is a national-level planning textbook for general higher education during the "Tenth Five-Year Plan" period and serves as a nationwide applicable textbook for various rock engineering fields. It emphasizes the integration of theory and practice, equally highlighting both rock mechanics and rock engineering, hence the title "Rock Mechanics and Engineering."
From Chapter 1 to Chapter 5, the book focuses on the education of fundamental theories, basic knowledge, and basic skills in rock mechanics, including the composition and mechanical properties of rocks and rock masses, constitutive relations and strength theories of rocks, in-situ stress and its measurement techniques, rock mechanics testing technologies, and numerical analysis techniques in geotechnical engineering. Chapters 6, 7, and 8 introduce the three major rock engineering fields—underground rock engineering, rock slope engineering, and rock foundation engineering—emphasizing the application of rock mechanics theories and methods in rock engineering design, construction, and maintenance. This helps students improve their problem-solving and analytical abilities through numerous engineering case studies.
Chapter 9 introduces the latest advancements in rock mechanics research, focusing on new theories, technologies, and methods in the field. It highlights the application of modern nonlinear theories, systems science theories, uncertainty analysis theories, modern information technology, and artificial intelligence theories in rock mechanics and engineering, providing students with insights and directions for further study and application.
In addition to serving as a textbook for undergraduate students, selected chapters can also be used for graduate students. The book is also a valuable reference for teachers, researchers, and engineering professionals in universities, research institutions, and engineering departments.
