While working as a dishwasher on a ship, Alyosha met the honest cook Smery, and with his help, began to read and developed a determination to pursue justice and truth. Five years later, Alyosha prepared to go to Kazan with the hope of attending university. My University is the last part of Maxim Gorky's autobiographical trilogy. The work tells of Alyosha's life in Kazan. At the age of 16, he left his hometown and went to Kazan to attend university. After his dreams were shattered, he had to struggle for survival. He lived in a "dampy room," did hard labor, associated with vagrants, and interacted with all kinds of petty bourgeoisie and intellectuals, attending a vast social university. In this university, he experienced the complex path of spiritual development, withstood various life tests, and made initial explorations into the meaning of life and the complexity of the world.
