Oliver Twist - Translation - Classics Library 041

Author: Charles Dickens
Publisher:
Publication Date: 2006-08-01
Features: There is a town, for various reasons, it is better to keep its name anonymous, and I do not intend to invent one for it. In some of its public buildings, there is also an institution that has been commonly established in towns of all sizes, namely, the poorhouse. The mortal man whose name appears in the title of this chapter was born in this poorhouse; the exact date is unnecessary to mention, as it is irrelevant to the reader, at least at this stage. After the parish doctor brought that infant into this world filled with sorrow and trouble, whether he could survive and be given a name was a very questionable matter for a considerable period of time. It is quite possible that this biography would never be published, or even if it were, it would only have a few pages, but it would possess an inestimable advantage, namely, becoming a model of brief yet credible biographies in the literature of all countries throughout history...
